For many of our girls, school has been a place of struggle. They’ve fought to succeed and found only failure–this is usually because the traditional school system could not support them in the way they needed to be supported. At Asheville Academy, we work to mend that relationship to school and inspire them to love learning again.
Every student is unique. While this is easy to accept, traditional schools often have difficulty catering to every student’s needs–especially if that student is struggling more than the rest. When this is the case, a more individualized learning approach needs to be applied.
At Asheville Academy, we utilize an individualized learning approach because we understand that every student has particular needs that need to be met in order to help them excel and succeed.
How we help our students succeed
Individualized Academic Programming
For our students, we have certain times scheduled for an Independent Study class period. This time allows our students more support for additional elective credits, such as music, foreign languages, etc; for skill building; or for remediation.
For example, if a student is struggling with sensory integration or anxiety, they’re given an independent curriculum that connects and interlinks with the work they’re doing back in Occupational Therapy or the target interventions they’re receiving from Learning Support.
Helping Every Student Succeed
We understand that every student is different. They have unique needs, issues, and ways they take in information. We strive to cater to every student’s particular learning needs to help them reach their full potential.
We do this by providing supportive interventions inside the classroom–there’s also the option of providing education to the student outside the classroom in order to inspire self-efficacy and metacognition.
Working With Learning Differences
It’s not unusual for our girls to struggle with a learning difference. This is usually one of the reasons school has been difficult for them in the first place, which is why it’s so essential for us to assess it and help them work through it.
To do this, our Learning Support works with our Occupational Therapist to inform teachers on how to carry out targeted, intensive interventions within the classroom. Alongside this, we have a teacher guided study hall in which students have an Academic Guide that helps support and lead them towards task completion and organizational skills.
Education is an essential pillar to leading a full, successful life–which is why we focus so strongly on it at Asheville Academy. We know that if a girl isn’t motivated to succeed in learning new things, they’re continue to struggle throughout life.
