Using Exercise to Help Combat the High Rate of Depression in Girls

Study after study has confirmed that the rate of depression in girls is much higher than in boys. Researchers have found the two genders’ rate of depression splits around the age of middle schoolers. Girls are nearly 3-times as likely to develop depression during this age compared to boys.

A recent study shows promising evidence that one of the easiest ways to help combat this high rate of depression in girls may be through exercise.

How an hour of exercise could help fight depression in girls

In a recent study by the Black Dog Institute, researchers found that just one hour of exercise of any intensity can help combat depression. Evidence shows that the benefits hold up for any age or gender, meaning we can use it to help depression in girls.

This study is the largest and most extensive of its kind. The study included over 33,900 adults. These adults had their exercise levels and symptoms of anxiety/depression logged over the course of 11 years. The results were incredible.

They found that in 12 percent of those who struggled with depression, they could’ve prevented it through just one hour of exercise per week. That’s right, I said per week.

In a largely sedentary society, this study means the world. Many people struggle to find motivation to exercise–but starting off small, just an hour a week, could encourage more to get moving.

Samuel Harvey, lead author of the study, explained why this research is so critical:

“We’ve known for some time that exercise has a role to play in treating symptoms of depression, but this is the first time we have been able to quantify the preventative potential of physical activity in terms of reducing future levels of depression. These findings are exciting because they show that even relatively small amounts of exercise — from one hour per week — can deliver significant protection against depression.”

An hour of activity a week is certainly something we can fit into the lives of our daughters to help decrease the rate of depression in girls. Whether it’s walking, hiking, or yoga, this preventative measure could help many girls fight depression.
