Joy Thoma

Joy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, with a concentration in Criminology from Winthrop University in South Carolina. Originally from Connecticut, Joy realized that she wanted to become involved with youth since high school, where she coordinated a youth volunteer program for community outreach while working as a Librarian’s Assistant at Otis Children’s Library.

Since then, Joy has been involved with The Big Brother/ Big Sister program, The Boys and Girls Club of America, and South Carolina Guardian ad Litem’s office, where she took on mentor and administrative roles.

Joy has been with Asheville Academy since May of 2014, where she originally started as a Mentor. In December 2014, Joy received AAG’s accolade of “Mentor of the Year.”

Joy is the youngest of 6 children, an aunt to 11 nieces and nephews, and the proud pet parent of 3 dogs and a cat. She is an avid animal lover, outdoor enthusiast, and an adventurer at heart.
